FUHR develops highly specialized wire rolling mills for the widest range of industrial applications. As a supplier of complete turnkey solutions, we develop and construct tailor-made equipment and systems in close collaboration with our clients – systems that integrate seamlessly into existing processes on site.

Inline wire measurement system

In order to ensure the requirements are met in daily production, the wire must be continuously measured whilst exiting the rolling machine, and the roll positions must be corrected fully automatically. In multi-stage rolling processes it is necessary to measure and calibrate already after the pre-rolling stages. Therefore, modern high-speed rolling mills made by FUHR are equipped with several measuring systems.

IPU320 - Inline Profiling unit

With the IPU320, FUHR has developed an economical inline profiling system with which the manufacturers of enamelled wire can meet the high requirements of the automotive industry for quality and price. The IPU320 combines rolling and profile drawing processes, whereby large width to thickness ratios can also be achieved by driven rollers

Profile wire measurement in process

Conventional laser shadow measurement systems, as typically used in the drawing of round wires, have not proven to be successful in profiling lines. On the one hand, even a slight tilting of the wire changes the size of the shadow. On the other hand, laser systems cannot be used permanently in the wet area of the pre-rolling stages.

FUHR therefore relies on tactile measuring systems in which the wire is scanned with diamond-studded, high-resolution displacement measuring systems. Alternatively, instead of diamond styli, stylus rollers especially adapted to the wire geometry are available.

These measuring systems have been developed and built by FUHR for several years. They are characterised by precision, robustness and a particularly good price-performance ratio. As a result, it is now possible and common practice to integrate more than just one of these systems into a rolling mill.

In times of BIG DATA and Industry 4.0 the measuring for roll calibration often is no longer enough. The quality of the production processes should not only be regulated, but also analysed and documented. In order to be able to fulfil the customer requirements for data analysis and quality documentation, FUHR has now brought its data acquisition and evaluation system F-MAS to market maturity. It is available as an additional option to the tactile measuring systems but can also be retrofitted to existing digital or analogue measuring systems. During development, special attention was paid to compatibility with third-party systems - especially with regard to retrofitting in existing systems.

Enamel-insulated rectangular wire for the electric mobility

The production of high precision enamelable rectangular copper wires is much more difficult than the production of round wire. If drawing dies are used, a significantly worse - because asymmetrical - lubricating film of the cooling fluid is formed compared to drawing round wires. At speeds above 60 m/min, the lubricant film begins to crack in the area of the edge radii. A failure of the drawing die is the consequence as well as production stop and higher costs.

Today’s requirements of customers for enamel-insulated rectangular wires compel the manufacturers to prove that no wire damage occurs before enamelling. Even when using the best winding and unwinding systems, it cannot be guaranteed that the bare wire will be free of damage during offline production. This results in the task of inline production.

Because of this market developments, FUHR has developed an economical inline profiling system which is called IPU320.

The IPU320 combines rolling and profile drawing processes, whereby large width to thickness ratios of 1:1 up to 8:1 can also be achieved by driven rollers. The rolling unit is equipped with a closed control system, which does not require an electrical interface to the paint spray line. The required space is kept at a minimal size with 2 meters. Therefore, retrofitting in existing paint spray lines usually is possible without having to adapt the existing system.
